Santa Fe's surviving cafeteria...the other Furr's closed and Luby's moved away. Having said that, we recently decided to give it a try again after a multi year absence. For us, it's an "all you can eat for Seniors" deal that comes out to $22 for the two of us if drinking water...our preference. Parking near the door is usually not a problem and the lot is quite large if you can't snag that perfect spot up close.
The inside layout is typical of most cafeterias I've been in during the last sixty plus years, with a tray line and well lit views of all the offerings starting with a wonderfully varied salad area and progressing through a variety of meat, fish, chicken and vegetable offerings, nicely displayed and quickly served up by the friendly and agreeable line staff. The selection is typical of many cafeterias and presentation options are possible if for example, you prefer your meat, potatoes and gravy all together on a single plate instead of separate. Bread selection is good with a variety of freshly baked items. Desserts are also varied and freshly served. There is a good range of serve yourself drinks available as well. The menu tends to be southern food oriented with New Mexican offerings added for variety.
At the end of the line, we are presented with our bill and then off to find a place to sit and enjoy the food. Seating is abundant and varied with some booth space and plenty of table space. The dining area is well lit, carpeted and kept quite clean with bussers busy constantly. Usually, a server shows up promptly to look at the bill, our food and our check to see if we want anything else. A server will likely come by your table occasionally to see if you need drink refills or additional food items. This is all pleasant enough and unhurried. At the completion of your meal, paying is the only remaining thing. The cashiers have always been pleasant and friendly, asking if we enjoyed our meal and efficiently processing our payment.
Should the need arise, the restrooms are located a short walk from the dining area and are kept very clean and well stocked with necessary paper items.
Overall, this is a decent value for a slightly different dining experience in a town where it's possible to pay $40 for cheeseburgers and beer for two. The parking situation is a big plus. Service is good. Atmosphere is clean, neat and cafeteria all the way.
After reading the negative reviews, I'm wondering where those people had dinner...surely not here. -

Food was sub par and the dishes given to us were still dirty. Wouldn't recommend to anyone I know

It's Furr's. Standard selection of fried chicken and mac & cheese. Found a hair in one of the vegetables and that was the end of that. Dessert was probably the best part, and we didn't even finish most of our meal

This is one of the best Furr's in their restaurant system. For example the tartar sauce is the sauce I remember as a kid and young adult. Omar, the manager been with Furr's for 42 years. You can tell the difference at his restaurant. If you like Furr's in the past need to stop by and eat here. The food presentation on the serving line reminds of a well managed business. Omar, thanks for bring back the way food is suppose to taste. E2

Usually places like this remind me of going to the cafeteria style buffet my grandma used to go after Sunday service. Not a drop of glam but you can almost anything you'd want for your American food palette. Add the all you can eat aspect and you can do some serious damage to your calorie count for not a lot of Washingtons. Staff was very attentive and friendly and the food was fresh. Slightly better than that spot grandma liked but I'm not telling her that!
